When you're adapting to the big screen what many consider to be the Great American Novel -- and doing it in 3D, no less -- there is going to be heightened scrutiny about every choice you make. From plot to dialogue to aesthetics, a demanding public will insist on the utmost of authenticity.
Good to know, then, that Carey Mulligan and company are making sure they're well-prepared for the task.
Mulligan plays Daisy Buchanan in the upcoming Baz Luhrmann-directed epic adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby," which will feature Leonardo DiCaprio as the titular, mysterious millionaire; Tobey Maguire as narrator/protagonist Nick Carraway; Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan; Isla Fisher as Myrtle Wilson; and newcomer Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker.
Saying that she's both "terrified" and "freaked out" by the responsibility, Mulligan told during an interview at Comic-Con, "I've had so much time and I've been able to read so much Fitzgerald. I went to princeton where they keep all his papers and i got to look at zelda Fitzgerald's medical records and go to look at the most amazing stuff, the first manuscript of 'The Great Gatsby.'"
Mulligan went on to say Luhrmann provided the cast with research files, books, and presentations of gangsters and the economy of the 1920s, amongst other things, and feels she'll be plenty prepared.
"It's daunting. It's the biggest thing I've been involved in - it's strange going from a little off-Broadway play to such a big thing, but I'm raring to go," she told the BBC.
All that preparation and reverence is good, considering the movie history of the book.
Story continues below .contin_below{display:none;} blockquote .mid_article_ad_label{border:1px solid #dddddd;}AdvertisementAfter earlier adaptations, Robert Redford and Mia Farrow starred in a much-maligned 1974 big screen version, written by Francis Ford Coppola, which was savaged as too gentle with its subject matter and more concerned with aesthetics. In 2000, Toby Stephens, Paul Rudd and Mira Sorvino featured in a made-for-TV version, which would have been ripped had anybody seen it.
Mulligan will next be seen in the critically acclaimed B-style actioner "Drive," with Ryan Gosling, Christina Hendricks and Albert Brooks.

He is a great talent for a certain type of movie but this is not his type of movie. Redford was perfect in the original. He always looked anxious because the character was living a false life and everything about him was a facade, he played the 'uncomfortable' Gatsby really well. I don't think you need an American actress to play Daisy as they were very Anglophiles anyway and I almost fell off my chair when someone in the same breath suggested Reese Witherspoon could play the part and that Steve Mc Queen should have played Jay instead of Redford because Steve was elegant??? I personally do not think they should have remade this classic film, what can they add to it. After all that is why they remake films to add something, a perspective. I guess we will be having a musical version of 'Saving Private Ryan' next, can't wait. packamac: Carey Mulligan is a fantastic actress, the big discussion should http://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/packamac/carey-mulligan-on-the-great-gatsby_n_907972_99006253.htmlHistory | Permalink | Share it

It was all about Michael Douglas and Shia LeBouf. But this young lady certainly has acting chops. For those who haven't seen it, watch "An Education". She was briliant. I couldn't take my eyes off of her. She evoked thoughts of Audrey Hepburn. Admittedly not as gorgeous, but in my opinion, a more talented actor. She was cast for this role because she is talented and is one of the up and coming Hollywood stars. Simple as that really. jorgemgarcia25: Do not underestimate Ms. Mulligan! Why cast a British actress in this American role? She was terrible in Wall Street II. We did not even finish watching that movie.
We were bored with it.
Daisy Buchanan should have been cast to a naturally blonde, clean cut, blue eyed girl from the Midwest or from the South; someone like Reese Witherspoon. How about that young woman who played Zelda in Woody Allen's Midnight In Paris? She was terrific. I don't understand
why the same actresses, usually Brits, who get to act the "American" roles. O contrare, the Brits do not cast American actresses in their British films, now do they? There were no American women/men in "The King's Speech", or the film "The Queen" played by Helen Mirren.
If anyone in casting reads this, please take this thought in your next movie. We need to see some fresh, new AMERICAN born talent! kpflip: Carey Mulligan just does not cut the role of Daisy http://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/kpflip/carey-mulligan-on-the-great-gatsby_n_907972_99002148.htmlHistory | Permalink | Share it tonybfine 59 Fans 1 hour ago (2:16 AM) Claire Danes perhaps? - she is a phenomenal actress and has worked with both Baz and Leo before. Much that makes a great book great cannot be transferred to film, whereas lesser books, with more obvious and exploitative plots, and which do not so much rely on the artistry of the chosen words, are more compatible to the screen. The last two Gatsbys were mediocre. Gatsby's don't translate well to the big screen. A rich guy who is secretly a criminal? Wow, that's new. During the Great Depression, people enjoyed seeing rich people on the screen. Today, there's going to be a lot of resentment. Who care's about their problems? This is because she knows this role was not for her and she is doing it for the money and publicity. She will bomb this role working with Leo Dicaprio. I can wait.
This movie will NEVER be as good as the book. NEVER.
Just like the Harry Potter movies, although well done, will NEVER replace reading the books. kpflip: Poor girl is frightened? This is because she knows this http://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/kpflip/carey-mulligan-on-the-great-gatsby_n_907972_99002581.htmlHistory | Permalink | Share it
dennishastings Musician 119 Fans 4 hours ago (11:12 PM) I never really had a problem with the Redford movie. I read the book afterwards and it seemed pretty true to the plot. Maybe the critics wanted the cocaine and champagne parties and other signs of the growing society of rich and careless people. In other words, they probably want a departure from the book so it'll make boodles of money. The last film I saw like that was 'The Count of Monte Cristo'. They changed the ending entirely so that it was happy and not sad. It was a great travesty to change the ending of a classic novel like that. Also, DiCaprio just isn't that great of a choice for Gatsby. He's too short. They'll make him stand on a box. Redford was perfect. So, my opinion is... the new version will suck. dennishastings: I never really had a problem with the Redford movie. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/dennishastings/carey-mulligan-on-the-great-gatsby_n_907972_98985264.htmlHistory | Permalink | Share it DocEagle 59 Fans 2 hours ago (1:22 AM) I thought Redford was totally miscasts as Jay Gatsby. Leo better lose some weight. This role calls for a slim Gatsby. Also, Toby McGuire as

Never got the credit he deserved for Moulin Rogue (sp?).One of the most beautiful and interesting musicals I've ever seen on screen. Chicago won an award...it could'nt hold a candle to Moulin. It's where I fell in love with Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. I loved the Redford/mia/Coppala(sp?) version.
