When the Motorola Xoom tablet was released back in February, it shipped with 3G capability, but a 4G upgrade was promised as coming soon.
Now, about seven months later, the Motorola Xoom is getting its 4G capability.
Beginning Thursday, Xoom 3G tablets can be upgraded with new antennas that will enable the devices to run on Verizon's 4G LTE network.
And while it took more than half a year to get here, Xoom owners might also be a bit frustrated to know that the 4G upgrade isn't possible without mailing their tablet into Motorola to pull off the hardware change. Xoom owners, if they want to go from 3G to 4G service, will have to live without their tablet for awhile.
Inconvenient, to be sure, but at least the promise of 4G connectivity, with expected download speeds of five to 12 megabytes per second, will finally be fulfilled.
