Music For Meditation

From the very early days of meditation becoming popular, music has been a integral to it's effectiveness. There are certain strains of music that are known to have particularly beneficial effects. Music quickly alters ones state of mind, whether it be rock music to get the pumping, sad music to stir emotion, or meditative music to relax the mind. The most common effect of meditation music is the relaxing power to induce feeling of calmness and pleasant mood in the person meditating. A few other special tribal and meditation types of music hold a cleansing quality. This type of music generally has an effect on your "Chakras". Specific wavelengths and vibrations tide up your "chakras" and spiritual blockages.

Together with other equipment of meditation like meditation chairs, meditation music has also been flying off the shelves. In forums conducted for meditation, there is a roaring trade for quality meditation music. In fact, as long as the music fulfills its sole purpose of relaxing the mind and pleasing the temperament, listening to any of the music varieties is helpful.

The most fundamental reason why people partake in meditative activities is that they want to address the unbalanced moments and aspects of their lives as calmly as possible, and this is where music helps them release from the chaotic world around them. Although their are some specific meditation music styles that are highly recommended, you may stumble across your ideal audio tracks somewhere else, simply find the music that helps you relax and allows you to clear your mind completely.

No one can say that bringing your heart, mind and body as well as your spirit into a peaceful harmony and alignment can ever be an easy task. But meditation music makes the whole process all the easier for you. With the right genre of music, meditation will remove all material and emotional interruptions from your mind and allow you to discover new levels of deepest concentration.

You will soon notice a change in the way your body feels, a if positive energy is literally flowing through your body. No matter how much a stressed lifestyle you live, when meditation time comes around, everything about you and around you feels tranquil.

In order to truly achieve inner-peace, you will need to learn to work on strengthening the relationship of your mind & body, a feat that is much easier to achieve by embracing the power of sound, a sense that is often overlooked with many mind and self improvement techniques.

There are many aspects to think about, when looking for music to meditate to. The music strain should have the quality to act as a stress manager. It's important you understand that the right type of meditation music depends on your meditation plan. For example, morning meditation is not similar to meditation in the evening. For your morning meditation session, look for music that is fresh and energizing, ready to give you a truly natural kickstart. At night, the music you will use will be relaxing and work to relieve the stress of the day that has passed.

Remember, that 'Meditation Music' doesn't have to be instrumental. Some of the most effective meditation tracks simply use nature noises, such as the cliche sea or forest noises. The point is to ensure that the pace of the meditation music matches the particular ambience and mood that you are looking to achieve in your meditation environment.

The Benefits of Music and Meditation

Through meditation we learn to discover our own inner self; a consciousness of peace, light and delight. To attain this inner silence there are many techniques, which can be used to help. One of the most useful is listening to meditative, soulful music.

To elevate and raise our consciousness, we need the inspiration and aspiration to go beyond the mind. We cannot do this through book learning and listening to lectures, it is an experience which can only be achieved through our inner meditation. Meditative music, soulful music can be of great help in attaining this higher state of consciousness.

The highest form of meditation is silent meditation. But next to silent meditation is listening to meditative music. It is meditative, soulful music that awakens our aspiring heart. If the music is soulful we become inspired to yearn for something higher and deeper. Common mundane thoughts lose their attraction; we feel the necessity of listening to the Soul rather than the mind.

"Soulful music is the music that immediately elevates our consciousness to the Absolute, to the Highest."

- Sri Chinmoy

Music is powerful because it speaks directly to the heart. Music is often called the universal language, precisely because it accessible to all. The purpose of music is not to understand it with our mind. The essence of music is to feel and experience its transforming power.

"Soulful music is the music that wants to eventually transform our consciousness. It carries us into the Universal Consciousness and makes us feel that we are in tune with the highest, with the deepest, with the farthest."

- Sri Chinmoy

When listening to music for meditation we should not try to analyze it with our mind. We should not try to think at all. If thoughts do come, pay no attention, but keep all your concentration on the music and nothing else. If possible try to feel the music inside your own heart, don't feel the music is separate to your existence. Try to feel a oneness with the music. If the music is soulful and played in a meditative consciousness it will definitely help our meditation.

When using music for meditation it is important to be selective in the music you choose. If the music creates excitement and restlessness then this music is not suitable for meditation. The best music to choose is music, which embodies a peaceful, soulful and ethereal quality. The right music is to a large extent a personal choice but it is worth looking around to find the music that inspires your meditation.

Finding the Right Meditation Music For You

During certain aspects of your meditation routine you will need to play meditation music that helps alter your brainwaves and allows you to slip into a deep relaxing state. The type of meditation music preferred varies among students and teachers of meditation. The only underlying theme is that the meditation music has certain beats per minute to help change your perception.

At one point in time music from the Baroque era was considered the perfect meditation music, but if you do not like the music you are listening to while trying to achieve that perfect state of consciousness you will only hinder getting into your meditative state instead of enhance it. What does this mean for you then? It means that you are going to have to try meditating to a wide variety of music in order to find the mediation music that works for you.

Like writers who find inspiration in the music they listen to, the same can be achieved by the meditation student. Mediation music is not limited to what others feel is the perfect piece to achieve your goal. Many people who meditate to music enjoy listening to Jazz, Gregorian chanting, nature sounds, guitar pieces, Indian sitar music, and even good old fashioned rock and roll. We are all individuals with tastes that range from one end of the long musical spectrum to the other. Because we all find certain music to be more appealing to us than others, it is imperative that we find that perfect combination of meditation music for our studies.

Meditation music should have one element within it no matter what genre you prefer and this element is called 'binaural beats'. Binaural beats are musical beats that cycle through the song that are the same note throughout but are slightly off or out of tune with the rest of the composition. These beats are what you train your mind to listen for and the better you become at doing this, the easier it will be to follow the beats and let your mind slip into a meditative state.

It is a form of 'brainwave entrapment' and when it comes to meditation music as an aid in meditation it becomes a focus for the mind. Binaural beats help slow your brain down from a waking state - or Beta state - to a state of very relaxed consciousness - the Alpha state. People who have mastered meditation can go into the even deeper Theta state which borders on being drowsy or even sleeping without being aware of it when they listen to the right meditation music.

So how do certain musical genres work as mediation music? Let's take a look.

Meditation CDs - these compact disks are designed to provide you with soothing music that is purposefully equipped with binaural beats to take you into a meditative state. Some people find this type of meditation music very relaxing and often go to sleep to it.

Classical music - while once classical music was a soothing genre, many people hear pieces that are now associated with movies, television shows, commercials, or as 'elevator music'. If you truly enjoy and appreciate classical music and can focus beyond these associations, it is still very good meditation music.

Ethnic music - many people love to use these types of compact disks as mediation music because of the syncopated rhythms and unique vocal accompaniment. African tribal music provides the binaural beats needed to slip into a meditative state while Native American music provides the same with the chanting of a specific language. With interesting instruments such as the Indian sitar or the Oriental guitar, ethnic music can provide you with meditation music that is more flavorful yet relaxing.

Heavy metal music - Believe it or not, many people go into a meditative trance when they listen to heavy metal music. Heavy metal is filled with very distinct sounds and binaural beats that stand out over the grinding guitar solos and screaming lyrics. Some even claim they enjoy listening to this music as much for the almost meditative state they slip into as for the content. You don't need to blare it at 1,000 decibels to get the right effect, but calm listening to heavy metal as mediation music actually has some unique effects that make it easy to meditate to. It should not be overlooked as mediation music.

In general, the most popularly used type of meditation music are meditation CDs.
