The funeral for Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who died Wednesday at age 56, is taking place Friday, a report says.

The Wall Street Journal, citing a person familiar with the matter, reported that the funeral would be small and private. The source would not disclose where and when it would take place.

Apple said it has not planned any public services for Jobs. But Tim Cook, who took over the reins at Apple after Jobs stepped down as chief executive in August, wrote in a letter to the company's staff that a "celebration of Steve's extraordinary life" would be held soon for employees.

Jobs previously battled pancreatic cancer in 2003 and underwent a liver transplant in 2009. His cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.

Apple is paying tribute to Jobs on its home page, and encouraged fans to share memories and thoughts through a dedicated email address.

Al Gore, former vice president and environmental champion, has dropped a big hint to Apple fans -- he believes "new iPhones" will be coming in October, a report says.

iPhone rumors have been bouncing around for months, but Gore has an inside track: the Nobel Peace Prize winner is also on the board of Apple. And apparently, he's not shy about dropping hints.

According to the Associated Press, Gore was expounding on the exponential growth of computing at the Discovery Invest Leadership Summit in South Africa on Wednesday, when he said: "Not to mention the new iPhones coming out next month. That was a plug."

Gore's comments were reportedly recorded on an iPhone by summit attendee Toby Shapshak, who later repeated the statement to the AP.

The tease, which could indicate that Apple will release more than one fresh model, matches an earlier report today that the new iPhone 5 will be unveiled Oct. 4.

Apple Inc.'s iPhone 5 could be less than two weeks away.

That's thirteen days, if you prefer to count it that way. Or around 314 hours for you diehards. (Not going to do seconds or milliseconds, guys.)

The long-awaited device is going to be unveiled on Oct. 4, the Tuesday after next, if you believe a report this morning from AllThingsD's John Paczkowski, which cites anonymous sources. As the report points out, this event is going to be Apple's the first major release without co-founder Steve Jobs, who has been the face of the company for more than a decade.

Jobs, who resigned in August, has introduced every major Apple product for nearly the last 15 years -- the first iMac in 1998, the first iPod in 2001, and all the way up to the iPad 2 earlier this year.

Apple hasn't released a new iPhone since June 2010, and many Apple watchers have wondered why the company has taken longer than its usual 11 or 12 months to update the device. Is it political turmoil associated with Jobs' departure? Problems getting the right parts ready for an updated model? Delays involved with building two versions instead of one? Or all of the above?

The iPhone 5 will officially arrive on the watch of new Apple chief executive Tim Cook, usually credited for building Apple's broad and well-coordinated global network of parts suppliers and manufacturers. But Cook has the unenviable job of following the stage act of his former boss, the Frank Sinatra of the tech business.

Facebook is putting off its initial public offering until late 2012.

People familiar with the company told the Financial Times that Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg wants employees to focus on developing products for the world's most popular social networking site rather than on collecting an IPO payout.

These people said Facebook was not postponing the IPO because of turbulent market conditions, which have discouraged other Internet companies such as Groupon and Zynga. In all, there are more than 200 companies in the IPO pipeline, which has come to a standstill as companies wait for the markets to settle.

Facebook spokesman Larry Yu said in an emailed statement: "As is our typical practice, we just don’t get into speculation about an IPO."

Scott Sweet, managing director of research firm IPOBoutique.com, said Facebook's is one of the most highly anticipated IPOs.

"When they file this, there will be pandemonium, absolute pandemonium, whether they do it in April, May, June or tomorrow," Sweet said.

Facebook has become the "it" company for investors who have pushed its valuation to roughly $80 billion in the private markets. Facebook board member Peter Thiel said last year that Facebook would consider going public in 2012.

"It's a consumer-facing company, which makes it very interesting to people. People can relate to it," Thiel told the Los Angeles Times in an interview last year. "It's somewhat of a unique thing. There is a lot of intensity surrounding it."

Driving that intensity is the moneymaking potential of the site, which boasts more than 750 million users. The company has raised nearly $1 billion without tapping the public markets, and that has pent up demand from investors similar to the frenzy surrounding the 2004 initial public offering of Google.

Zuckerberg has deferred going public for as long as possible, a decision that Thiel supports. He compared Zuckerberg to an artist working on his chef-d'oeuvre with none of the distractions that running a public company bring.

"Mark is just doing what he has been doing for years, trying to figure out what the best new products to build are," Thiel said last year.

A Facebook IPO was expected by April 2012. The Securities and Exchange Commission forces companies that have more than 500 shareholders to make public some of their financial results in the first quarter of the following year. Facebook surpassed 500 shareholders in January when investment bank Goldman Sachs became an investor. Goldman Sachs and Digital Sky Technologies, a Russian Internet investment firm, invested a combined $500 million in the privately held company.

Google had a similar strategy. It waited nearly six years to go public. The Internet search giant filed its first financial statement in April 2004 and went public the following August.

According to the Financial Times, Facebook's revenue is in the range of $2 billion a year. A report last week from Reuters said the company had doubled its revenue to $1.6 billion in the first half of 2011.

The IPO delay may not thrill employees, Sweet said, but they have little to worry about.

"One can be sure that once Facebook does come out, they will be very wealthy individuals," he said.
