T-Mobile announced the addition of two 4G tablets to its gadget lineup Monday: the new SpringBoard tablet and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, both of which run Google's Android Honeycomb operating system.

The SpringBoard will feature a 7-inch touch screen, a 1.2-gigahertz dual-core processor, 16-gigabytes of built-in storage and an SD card slot that can make use of microSD cards up to 32 gigabytes.

A 5-megapixel camera that can shoot up to 720p video is found on the back of the SpringBoard, and a 1.3-megapixel camera is mounted on the front for video chatting. The SpringBoard will also have an HDMI port for connecting to a TV.

T-Mobile hasn't said when it will be released or how much it will cost -- although the company did say in a statement that it will be "one of T-Mobile's most affordable tablets" and should be available in time for the holidays.

The new tablet is the second from T-Mobile to be outfitted with its own branding -- the first being the T-Mobile G-Slate from LG. The T-Mobile SpringBoard will be built by low-cost gadget maker Huawei in Shenzhen, China.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 (named for its 10.1-inch screen) has been out for months, but hasn't yet been available from T-Mobile.

California Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris is joining the U.S. Department of Justice in an antitrust suit opposing the proposed merger of AT&T and T-Mobile, sources close to the case confirmed.

Harris on Friday afternoon is expected to announce the legal action.

“This is huge,” said Samuel Kang, general counsel for the Greenlining Institute, a Berkeley consumer group that advocates to provide better financial and utility services for low-income communities.

“We’re talking about the state’s top consumer advocate [Harris] questioning the merger. There are huge questions that have implications for the largest [cellphone] market in the United States.”

On Aug. 31, the U.S. Justice Department sued to challenge AT&T’s $39-billion takeover of T-Mobile USA Inc., based on worries that consumers would be hit with higher prices, worse wireless service and dwindling mobile phone options. Obama administration officials also said they were worried that the combination of the two companies would be a job killer.

The Justice lawsuit was followed a week later by a similar action by Sprint-Nextel Corp., which also sued to block the merger.  Sprint, the third-largest wireless carrier behind Verizon Wireless and AT&T, stands to be marginalized if it is forced to compete with two far larger carriers, including a merged AT&T and T-Mobile.

On Thursday, a group of 15 Democratic members of Congress wrote to President Obama urging him to back off his opposition to the merger, saying it would create thousands of jobs.  Critics have called that claim into question.

Sprint backs government suit to block AT&T takeover of T-Mobile

Sprint has been among the most vocal opponents of AT&T's proposed $39-billion takeover of T-Mobile USA pretty much since the deal was announced.

On Wednesday, the third-largest wireless carrier in the U.S. unsurprisingly came out in support of the Department of Justice's antitrust lawsuit that is looking to block AT&T's purchase of T-Mobile from Germany's Deutsche Telekom.

"The DOJ today delivered a decisive victory for consumers, competition and our country," Vonya B. McCann, senior vice president of government affairs for Sprint, said in a statement. "By filing suit to block AT&T's proposed takeover of T-Mobile, the DOJ has put consumers' interests first. Sprint applauds the DOJ for conducting a careful and thorough review and for reaching a just decision -- one which will ensure that consumers continue to reap the benefits of a competitive U.S. wireless industry. Contrary to AT&T's assertions, today's action will preserve American jobs, strengthen the American economy, and encourage innovation."

In March, shortly after AT&T announced that it had agreed to buy T-Mobile, Sprint formally objected to the deal. In May, Sprint asked the FCC to block the transaction, arguing that it would result in a less competitive wireless market -- one where a combined AT&T and T-Mobile would dwarf the rest of the industry.

Currently, the big four of Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile control about 90% of the U.S. wireless market.

For its part, AT&T says it believes its takeover of T-Mobile would create jobs in the U.S. and allow it to meet consumer demand faster than if it proceeded on its own. AT&T said it was surprised by the Justice Department suit.

In the suit, the government contends that combining AT&T, the nation's second largest carrier, a and T-Mobile, the fourth largest carrier, would result in not only less competition among wireless carriers, but also increased prices, poor-quality services and fewer innovative products being developed.

The suit also expressed concern that as many as 20,000 jobs would be lost if AT&T consumed T-Mobile due to the redundancies in the two companies' operations and staff.

AT&T has said it will fight the Justice Department suit in court.
