50 days of Lulz: The life and times of LulzSec

lulzsec

It’s been a whirlwind few months for LulzSecurity (LulzSec), bursting onto the tech scene with the high-profile hacks of US TV network Fox, moving on to compound Japanese electronics giant Sony, taunting its detractors as they sought to expose row after row of SQL database entries in high-profile government and agency websites.

On Saturday, LulzSec announced on Twitter that after 50 days of “anarchic lulz” it was to cease operations, dropping its largest collection of compromised data in torrent file posted to The Pirate Bay. The 457.84MB download contained information including AOL internal data, AT&T internal data and the “FBI being silly” among its contents.

In 50 days, the group dominated headlines of nearly every print and online news agency across the world, distanced itself from the arrest of Ryan Cleary by the Metropolitan Police and antagonized whoever it could, simply “for the lulz”. With each day, we got to know more about the group; what its motivations were, how it was able to steal so much data and the identities of its members were supposedly revealed on a number of occasions.

With the group now apparently disbanded, here’s a look back at 50 days of LulzSec’s exploits.

X-Factor, Fox and PBS

On May 7, LulzSecurity emerged on Twitter, registering the @LulzSec username. Posting its first tweet, the group detailed the compromise of Fox.com with the message:

“FOX.COM HACKED! # MySQL version: (5.1.47-log) running on 10.96.57.102 (www.fox.com) #Fox #hacked –> #XFACTOR <–”

Ironically, we reported news of the attack five days before LulzSec announced its haul, not knowing at the time who was behind the hack that was designed to expose details of applicants to The X Factor. The group didn’t have its own website at the time, so it took to the world’s most well-known torrent hosting website The Pirate Bay to release hundreds of thousands of names, email addresses, telephone numbers and street addresses of people wanting a shot at becoming the next big star.

In its first day, the group was happy to have amassed 50 followers, little did it know that it would be a drop in the ocean compared to now many followers it would accumulate in the days that followed.

Three days passed between The X Factor leak and its next big release, Fox.com’s “innerworkings” and a database drop of Fox’s sales database. During this time, “The Lulz Boat” was coined, ASCII art was drawn up, UK ATM details released and the group highlighted the password used by the Vice President of Fox.

On May 12, LulzSec announced it was contemplating creating its own website to host its releases and give it a proper presence on the web, predicting at the time that Twitter might not take kindly to the LulzSec Twitter account. As the next two days passed, the group released more Fox user credentials, teasing that it had data from an FBI affiliate and then announced that LulzSec had three people maintaining its Twitter account.

It was all quiet on the LulzSec front until it would become one of a long list of attackers that leaked Sony’s details, compromising databases hosted by Sony Japan and releasing them on Pastebin.

LulzSec finally got the press coverage it craved when it posted a seemingly innocuous link on its Twitter feed, linking to US TV network PBS. The tweet “http://www.pbs.org/lulz/ Oh shit, what just happened @PBS?“ linked to a newly created page on the PBS domain but its decision to create a fake news article stating that “2Pac still alive in New Zealand” thrust the group into the spotlight, with every technology and online news outlet linking to the hack and LulzSec’s announcements.

The group had gained access to PBS’s internal hosts, its database list, staff database, authors database, pressroom users database, stations database and MySQL users database – which, at the time was its biggest overall haul of company-wide data. It was believed that the group took action after the network aired a show which was seen to paint whistleblowing website WikiLeaks in a bad light.

To make things worse, LulzSec adopted the theme-song from the Love Boat, all the while soliciting for Bitcoin donations.

LulzSec Enemies, LulzSecurity.com and More Sony “Ownage”

With more high-profile hacks, LulzSec found itself the target of other members of the Internet (in)-security scene, most notably @th3j35t3r, an attacker (or group of attackers) which was hellbent on exposing the identities of LulzSec members. Realizing that this was the case, LulzSec immediately began DDOS’ing the IRC servers used by th3j35t3r and also servers used by hacking magazine 2600.

On June 2, LulzSec released what it referred to as “Sownage”, a complete dump of Sony Pictures’ codes, coupons and user databases, stating that it had released details on “1,000,000 users’ personal information, including passwords, email addresses, home addresses, dates of birth, and all Sony opt-in data associated with their accounts”.

The following day, the group announced it had hacked Nintendo but did not release data stolen in the attack. However, a more notable release was issued the same day, an attack on InfraGard Atlanta’s user database, a company that was affiliated with the FBI.

The group issued a press release to accompany the hack, stating:

“It has come to our unfortunate attention that NATO and our good friend Barrack Osama-Llama 24th-century Obama have recently upped the stakes with regard to hacking.

They now treat hacking as an act of war. So, we just hacked an FBI-affiliated website (InfraGard, specifically the Atlanta chapter) and leaked its user base. We also took complete control over the site and defaced it, check it out if it’s still up: http://infragardatlanta.org/.”

Details emerged that the companies’ owner Karim Hijazi asked LulzSec to help him “eliminate [his] competitors”, which the group didn’t take kindly to. The group decided to release nearly 1,000 of Hijazi’s personal emails, as well as the IRC log where he spoke with the group.

At the beginning of June, LulzSec started releasing details of its exploits on LulzSecurity.com, presenting a united presence for its releases, making sure that copycats where unable to utilize Pastebin to piggyback of its name.

On June 6, the group crossed the 75,000 Twitter followers milestone:

Compromising The NHS, The Senate And Getting The Taiwan News Treatment

June 9 saw LulzSec admit it had managed to infiltrate the servers of the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK, but in a move away from its typical policy, the group decided to email NHS administrators and alert them to security holes in their online portal.

This gained LulzSec more press coverage, helping to boost the group’s Twitter following to above 100,000 followers.

7 Must Read Life Lessons from Benjamin Franklin

Benjamin Franklin was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America (USA). A famous polymath, Franklin was a leading author and printer, political theorist, politician, postmaster, scientist, inventor, satirist, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat.

As a scientist, he was a major figure in the American Enlightenment and the history of physics for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity. He invented the lightning rod, bifocals, the Franklin stove, a carriage odometer, and the glass 'armonica'. He formed both the first public lending library in America and the first fire department in Pennsylvania.

His colorful life and legacy of scientific and political achievement, and status as one of America's most influential Founding Fathers, have seen Franklin honored on coinage and money; warships; the names of many towns, counties, educational institutions, namesakes, and companies; and more than two centuries after his death, countless cultural references.

7 Must-Read Life Lessons from Benjamin Franklin:

  1. Waste Not

"Do not squander time for that is the stuff life is made of."

Your time is your life. If you waste your time, you are wasting your life. I’ve never met a successful person who didn’t value their time, and I’ve never met an unsuccessful person who did.

Don’t let other people waste your time either, why is it when someone wants to “kill an hour,” they want to kill your hour as well? Protect your time, it can never be replaced, it can never be replenished, your time is your life.

  2. Learn

"Being ignorant is not so much a shame, as being unwilling to learn."

Benjamin Franklin said, “He that won't be counseled can't be helped.” Always be open to learning. You can learn from anyone, and from any situation. You can learn from the fool as well as the genius. Bruce Lee said, “A wise man can learn more from a foolish question than a fool can learn from a wise answer.”

  3. Make Mistakes

"Do not fear mistakes. You will know failure. Continue to reach out."

Success comes from doing things “right,” and doing things right is usually the result of first doing things wrong. You are certain to make mistakes; the path to success is lined with mistakes and failures, just keep moving. Successful people make a lot of mistakes, but they don’t quit, they keep moving until they arrive to their goal.

  4. Energy and Persistence

"Energy and persistence conquer all things."

To have energy and persistence you must have passion, there must be an inner vision that drives you to achieve your goal.

If you don’t have a clear picture of where you’re going, then you don’t have the energy or persistence to make any noteworthy progress. You must be driven by a picture that is bigger than your current reality.

  5. Prepare

"By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail."

It’s better to not have an opportunity and be prepared, than to have an opportunity and not be prepared. Success loves preparation, are you prepared?

If the perfect opportunity presented itself, would you be ready for it? Spend your days preparing for success, so when your opportunity comes, you will be ready.

  6. Be Diligent
"Diligence is the mother of good luck."

Solomon wrote, the diligent shall be made rich. If you want to be lucky, be diligent, the more diligent you are, the luckier you will be. Everyone has the ability to increase their luck seven fold by becoming more diligent.

Create the habit of being diligent in all you do, and you will be surprised at how lucky you become.

  7. Make an Impression

"Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing."

Benjamin Franklin said, “Many people die at twenty five and aren't buried until they are seventy five.” I hope you’re not dead, I hope you haven’t achieved all that you’re going to achieve; I hope your best days are in front of you. I think they are.

5 Quietly Powerful Strategies To ‘Press Play’ On Your Dream Life

Do you ever get so caught up in the rush of your crazy-busy-life that you forget to stop and reflect a little? Wait, don’t answer that - I’m going to go ahead and assume yes. I mean let’s be honest here – when was the last time you actively pursued an activity that was:
  • closely related to one of your big dreams,
  • made you feel most alive or most yourself, or
  • just plain old wasn’t part of your busy-list?
If you couldn’t think of the answer to at least one of those right away, it was probably longer than it should be. Assuming, of course, that it is important to you to pursue your dream life. Sometime this decade.

How Often Do You Stop To Sharpen The Saw?
Steven Covey, famed for his teaching on productivity and life-management, talks about taking time out for something he calls sharpening the saw. The saw being you, your skills and talents, and most certainly your goals and dreams. Of course the benefits to such time out from daily life are obvious, but that doesn’t make it any easier to stop and ‘indulge’ in such a past-time, does it?

And when we get to the crux of it, I think that’s the real problem; the concept that taking time out to rebuild or develop our talents and skills – let alone our mind – is an indulgence or something that we’ll make time for once everything else is done.

Well here’s the kicker, and I think it’s important that you know this. You are going to DIE without everything being done. It’s time to get over trying to complete that ever-increasing list of yours and start being more effective with the limited time you to have.

Pressing Play On Your Dream Life

This morning I took some time out to do just that. I managed to tear myself away from my normally frantic ‘never-quite-can-keep-up’ writing schedule to ‘sharpen the saw’, by completing some values, mission and goal exercises in my new planner. Can I just say – I feel amazing for having done this. Calm , in control, and empowered to take on my dream life. And I would very much like to pass some of this positivity on to you! So without further ado, here are 5 quietly powerful strategies you can use to lay the foundation of your dream life and finally ‘press play’ on those big goals.

Step One: Values
Values are the innate guiding principles that you would ideally like to live by. When your life is not in alignment with your values you may feel restless, discontent, guilty, and frustrated. If you’ve never done this before (or not for a long while) I urge you to take some time to consider what your deep inner values are. Why not pull out a nice journal or just start a new file – label it ‘My Dream Life’!

To give you some examples, my values include health, creativity, family, spirituality, courage, gratitude, patience, abundance, and business. Covey suggests attaching a few clarifying statements to each value, i.e. “I take time to reflect daily and be grateful for the things in my life”

Step Two: Roles
Once you’ve determined your values it’s worth taking a few minutes to consider all the different hats you wear in your life. There’s probably at least 4 or 5 key roles that you’re trying to fulfill, and I’ll bet you have goals associated with each of them.

If you don’t take some time to break this stuff down you will likely find yourself moving sideways from one thing to the next and basically ending up going round in circles, rather than truly progressing forward! My roles included writer, wife/mother, athlete, coach, and ‘sharpen the saw’. That’s right – a whole separate role just for the development side of my life! Add some clarifying statements to each of your roles as well; this will help you when it comes time to set goals.

Step Three: The "Be, Do, Have" Exercise

One of my favorite exercises, and one I’ve come back to time and again over the years, is Covey’s ‘be, do and have’ exercise. It’s where you get to really dream about how your life will be when you do start pressing play every day! It’s very simple – all you need to do is fill a half page or so with things you’d like to one day be, another half page with things you’d like to do, and then another with things you’d like to have. For an example, I’d like to be a published author (in a bookstore!), I’d like to have at least 2 more children, and I’d like to spend 3 months out of each year living overseas at some point throughout our lives (do).

Step Four: Reflect

After completing the above exercise you’ll be raring at the bit to start coming up with some exciting goals and strategies to help you achieve all that good stuff. I know I was! Well – don’t do it! At least, not yet. The reality is that it’s in your nature to always want more, and (if you let it) your mind will continue to come up with endless possibilities for your life. This is definitely a good thing, but it can also make life messy and overwhelming as you jump from task to task. Taking time to reflect on what really drives you will give you focus and a sense of calm as you plan your big goals for the months ahead.

Here are some questions I like to ask myself when reflecting:
  • What am I truly passionate about?
  • What gives me a sense of ‘flow’?
  • What are some moments when everything has just seemed right?
  • What makes me feel happy; joyful; more alive?
  • What has the opposite effect?
Step Five: Goal-setting time!
This is my favorite part of the journey – it’s where you get to visualize and then plan the specifics of your dream life. The who, what, when, where, why and how! I love this part because I find words to be incredibly powerful – just writing something down can help you to picture it actually happening, and then when you break it down into small steps all of a sudden something big and scary becomes not only tangible but also achievable. So – setting smart goals is really easy now that you’ve done all the groundwork.

Take a moment to refer back to your values and your roles, and then simply set goals for each value/role! It’s useful to decide on a due date for your goal, and then break it down into small steps. Make them bite sized! For example, if one of my goals is to have a column in a health and fitness magazine, my steps would include brainstorming post ideas, writing drafts, asking for feedback, brainstorming title ideas, researching editor/contact details, and finally submitting an article!

What Next?
Of course you could keep going even beyond these 5 steps. Covey talks about using this stuff as a base to create a mission for your life, but even if you don’t do that you will notice a tremendous sense of empowerment simply by taking time out for yourself. Another next step you could take (and one that is next on my agenda) is to use your goals as a base to planning out your year, month, week and then even your days. Sure, it will take you an extra half hour or so each week, but really – in the midst of that crazy-busy-life of yours could there be any greater feeling than knowing that each busy little moment is one that truly counts toward your dream life? Who knows – you may actually become one of those people who does press play every day!

What else do you do to press play on your life and dreams? I’d love to hear your strategies and tips for making sense in a busy world … and I’d also love to hear from you if you do take time out to follow this 5-point plan!

21 Simple Ways to Live an Exceptional Life

Everyone wants to live an exceptional life. The problem arises when it comes time to define what that means to you. If you embrace someone else’s definition of what an exceptional life is, you will end up disappointed sooner or later, because you alone have to determine what you want.

It can be tough to get clear on what you want, and you won’t always be perfectly clear, but the goal isn’t to be clear, the goal is to move forward and explore. If you knew everything, life would get boring fast. There has to be a degree of uncertainty to keep things interesting.

With that said, I thought I’d throw in a few ways on how you can get
  1. Be Kind
One of the first things you want to do in order to live an exceptional life is to be kind. Being kind is nothing special, yet at the same time it is. It can be smiling at people in your neighborhood, or helping a friend out. Treat people as you would like to be treated.

  2. Learn
Become a lifelong learner. Study personal development material and incorporate the lessons you learn into your own life.

If you do this, you will see your life transform in more ways than you can imagine right now, because even one new tweak each and every week will yield powerful results in a few years.

  3. Exercise
We all have physical bodies, and the better you take care of yours, the better you will feel. When you exercise regularly, not only will you have more energy, but you will also have more clarity and sense of purpose.

I know that you’ve heard this over and over. However, most people still haven’t applied it and taken action. If you are in this group, you have to ask yourself why!

  4. Face Your Fears
Everyone has things that they are afraid of. The truth of the matter is that when you face your fears, they melt away.

What happens is that you realize that your fears are nowhere near as scary as you make them out to be. So face your fears and go after what you truly want, because that is what you deserve.

  5. Release Blocks
Throughout our lives we’ve picked up strategies and ways of doing things that aren't helpful anymore.

There are easy and elegant ways to release emotional blocks and negativity in your life. I personally recommend NLP and EFT, but you may want to do some research and discover what fits with you.

  6. Set Goals
Setting smart goals can be as simple as writing down what you want to accomplish in three months, one year, five years, and ten years.

Sometimes you won't reach your goals, but they help you move in the right direction. Set goals, and become clear about what you truly want to achieve and accomplish in life, as well as how you want to feel when you’ve got it all.

  7. Dream Big
Don't be afraid to dream big. If you’ve always visualized being a world renowned writer, then go for it and see what happens.

It may come to pass, or it may lead you onto another path that may be even more fulfilling than the one you thought you wanted. Life has a way of surprising you from time to time, so plan for it.

  8. Simplify
There's no need to clutter up your life. When you simplify and get rid of the stuff that you don't need, you will feel more clear and better about yourself.

You don't have to spend all your money on “stuff,” because what we truly want is to feel good, and the best experiences in life are free anyway.

  9. Meditate
Meditation literally opens new doors in life and in your mind. At least that is what I have experienced, having meditated for almost a decade.

Meditation is as simple as focusing your attention on one thing. It could be focusing on your breathing when you're washing the dishes, or just noticing your muscles as you're outside taking a walk.

  10. Be Yourself
Almost everyone has been taught that being yourself is not enough. But you may also have realized that you cannot not be yourself, because that is what and who you are.

You are on this blue planet of ours for a reason, and the only way you can do what you were meant to do is by being yourself.

  11. Be Honest
I don’t know about you, but honesty and integrity are values that are very high up on my list. If you want others to treat you with honesty, then you have to be honest. That means not telling small lies that might make your life easier. Become aware of the fact that there are no harmless lies.

  12. Focus on Your Strengths
Life is too short to worry about things that you're not good at, and may not even like. If you like something and aren't good at it yet, then go ahead and learn more about it.

But you don't have to improve your weaknesses, because you can just focus on your strengths and become even more exceptional.

  13. Trust Your Heart
In the beginning it can be difficult to trust your heart because your mind tends to get in the way. But, once you start following your heart and realize that it guides you in the right direction, your mind will have enough proof to trust that your heart knows what it's doing.

Besides, when you start trusting your heart, your life becomes much more interesting, and dare I say: exceptional.

  14. Eliminate Excuses
Life is too short to make excuses and avoid doing what you really want to do.
There is no such thing as security or comfort. Most people that have security and comfort are bored out of their mind. And when you're bored, it means that you are shutting yourself out from what the world has to offer. So go ahead and face your fears, eliminate your excuses, and go after what you truly desire.

  15. Kill Perfectionism
Perfectionism has killed many dreams; don't let it kill yours. You’ve probably learned that making mistakes is bad, but that couldn't be further from the truth.

It isn't until you fail and make mistakes that you begin learning what works and what doesn't. We are all different, so we have to travel our path and discover what we truly want from life.

  16. Explore the Weird
Don't hold yourself back from exploring the weird parts of life. I know there are things that you enjoy that you are afraid of enjoying fully, because of what others would think of you.

There are people out there in the world just like you. And you aren't going to feel fulfilled until you embrace the entirety of who you are.

  17. Surround Yourself with Awesome
When you surround yourself with exceptional people, your life will become exceptional. If you have friends that drain you of energy, it's time to let them go.

It's time to set boundaries for what you allow into your life, if you want to live a truly awesome and passionate life. It can be done, but the decision always starts with you.

  18. Learn from Negativity
Often the most negative events in our lives end up teaching us valuable lessons that come in handy down the road. When you are experiencing negativity, it may not feel like it is there for a reason, but it is. This is what experience has shown me to be true, but I may be wrong.

You’ll just have to go out there and find out for yourself, won’t you?

  19. Enjoy Life
And above all else, remember to enjoy life and smell the roses. When you walk, remember to breathe deeply and be grateful for what you already have.

You can always want more, but stop and appreciate what you already have, because if you don’t do it now, when will you?

  20. Find Your Passion
Personally, I think finding your passion in life is one of the most crucial things you can do, because it gives you a sense of purpose and it makes you feel fulfilled.

When you find your passion, it will carry you through the tough times and help you create the life of your dreams. But it all starts by asking the question: What makes you come alive?

  21. Follow Your Passion
Once you've found your passion, it's time to start taking massive action in making it a reality. I started doing this just a few years ago, and I'm amazed at how far I've come in this short period of time.

You, too, can do this if you truly decide to start right away. It's easy to put things off and wait for the perfect moment, but if you do that, you will be waiting for the rest of your life.
Do you really want to do that, or would you like to start now?

Four Steps to Change Your Life – With Books

The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who can’t read them. - Mark Twain (attributed)

How many books are on your shelf collecting dust?

As a coach, educator and self professed life-long learner, I believe that books are one of the very best bargains around – with years of experience and best practice crammed into a $20 package.

However, that doesn’t mean you should read indiscriminately. A book may only cost you $20.00, but the cost of your time to read it may be significantly higher. If your time is worth $100+ dollars per hour, then reading a book must be worth thousands of dollars to make it worthwhile

Here are four suggestions to make the most of the current books on your bookshelf, and, the future books you plan to read:
  1. Choose the Right Books
By choosing books which are aligned with your professional and personal goals, you will be feeding your mind great thoughts that will fill you with the knowledge for greater achievement.

“The only books that influence us are those for which we are ready, and which have gone a little farther down our particular path than we have yet got ourselves.” - E.M. Forster

  2. Underline or Highlight Key Points
Look for points that hit the mark with your specific interest or needs. This lets you filter through the different messages so you can narrow your focus to ideas that will be useful to you.

From Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us by Daniel Pink, I took these key points:
    • Autonomy – having the ability to influence our world
    • Mastery – continuing to grow, evolve and learn
    • Purpose – the importance of meaningful work and contributing to our world
Our work should fulfill those three areas. As a coach, I’m supporting people in their personal and professional journeys on the road to mastery. I work with people seeking meaning in their lives as parents and as business people. The three above points are highly relevant to what I do.

  3. Put the Book Away – Then Review
Once you’ve finished reading, put the book away for at least a week and then go back over the items which you’ve underlined and place an asterisk (*) or other symbol next to the top ideas for future follow up.

Once a week has passed, review all the * items and then create a list of follow up actions you will take to execute on these ideas. There’s no point capturing these valuable ideas if you don’t have a follow up action plan. Capturing these valuable ideas without a follow up action plan is worthless.

Good action items involve the development of a specific project, with an end goal in mind – for instance, “become healthier and fitter.”

    Your goal should:
    • Be specific (e.g. “lose weight”)
    • Be measurable (e.g. “lose 10 lbs”)
    • Have a time frame (e.g. “lose 10lbs by summer vacation”)
Your action items should be clear tasks, like “remove all trans fats from home” or “buy fruit and veg every Saturday morning.”

  4. Open Up Your Calendar
Put these new, actionable items into your calendar. Make sure that you block out sufficient time to complete these priorities.

It takes time to establish a new behavior: you need to engage with it consistently until you’ve created a habit. Remember that it’s better to do a few things well than to do many things badly: if you were digging oil wells, you’d want to have a few deep ones rather than lots of shallow ones.

Look for actions which you can repeat on a daily or weekly basis. For daily actions, you might want to create an easy way to record your progress – e.g. by using a food log to monitor your portion sizes and your fruit and veg intake.
What books have made a big difference in your life? How did you act on the ideas provided by the author? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
